Hairline spray: how to redraw your hairline and edges
Key takeaways
A hairline spray is the finishing touch barbers use: a few bursts of coloured spray, guided by a comb, are enough to redraw a sharper hairline and well-defined haircut edges. It is neither a dye nor a treatment. It is hair make-up that colours the hair and skin on the surface until your next shampoo. Here is how to use it without the “drawn-on” look.
What is a hairline spray and what is it for?
In barbershops you will hear hairline spray, edge-up spray or men’s contour spray. The idea: a coloured spray, often black for dark hair, visually reinforces the edge of your hair after a cut or a fade. The pigments lightly tint the skin showing between short hairs and cling to your existing hair. The area looks denser and the line looks sharper.
At Hairvisual we do this with coloured thickening sprays such as Volumiz thickening and colouring spray, combined with a precision comb. The spray is mainly used on:
What about beards? Our Volumiz and Hairfor2 sprays are designed for hair and scalp, not for beards: we do not recommend them there.
Who is it for? Men, and women too
Men’s contour spray is the best-known use: short hair, fades, a hairline that is starting to move back. With a short cut, a touch of colour is enough to bring back a clean line.
Women use it for the hairline too: a sparse edge, thinner temples, a less dense frame around the face when hair is pulled back. The Hairline Optimizer comb is designed for both.
A clean cut makes the line easier to read and the make-up more discreet. To find yours, read our guide to haircuts that camouflage hair loss. If your hairline or temples are clearly receding, the spray remains a cover-up: to find out why, see a dermatologist or doctor.
How to apply hairline spray, step by step
This is the method we recommend with Volumiz spray and the Hairline Optimizer comb. Work on clean, dry, styled hair in front of a well-lit mirror.
1 · Position the comb to protect your skin
Place the Hairline Optimizer at the top of your forehead, exactly where you want the edge. Because it is transparent, you can see your hairline in the mirror while you apply. Because it is flexible, it follows the shape of your forehead and your temples. It also acts as a shield, keeping spray off your forehead.
2 · Shake and spray from a distance
Shake the can well. Hold the spray away from your head, never right against the hair, and spray in short bursts above the comb. Close your eyes or shield them with your hand when spraying the front of your head.
3 · Let it dry
Keep the comb in place for a moment while the product dries. Removed too early, it lets the still-wet colour slide onto the skin.
4 · Remove the comb and check
Lift the comb away cleanly, without sliding it across your forehead. The line should be crisp, with nothing left on the skin. Check from the front and in profile, and touch up if needed, comb in place.
Hairvisual tip: do not aim for a perfectly straight line. A natural hairline is slightly irregular: place the Hairline Optimizer comb along the curve of your forehead, then add a very light mist without the comb, just behind the line, to soften the transition.
Choosing the right shade of contour spray
Shade is half the result. Pick the one closest to your hair colour at the root. Black spray suits black or very dark hair. On dark brown hair, black can look too strong on the hairline.
For lighter or salt-and-pepper hair, Hairfor2 colouring and thickening spray comes in 10 shades, from brown-black to light blonde, including auburn and grey. If you are torn between two shades, test discreetly at the nape or behind the ear before working on your forehead.
Mistakes to avoid with a contour spray
How to remove hairline spray
Hairline spray washes out with shampoo. A regular wash is usually enough: massage the hairline and outlines well, where the product is most concentrated, then rinse thoroughly.
If you apply it every day, residue can build up and stop the next application from gripping as well. Hairfor2 anti-residue shampoo removes traces of spray, powder and hair mascara. Apply it to wet hair, lather, focusing on the areas you applied product to, then rinse. With a waterproof spray used daily, a second wash ensures everything is removed.
Frequently asked questions about hairline spray
How long does hairline spray last?
It stays in place until your next shampoo. The hairline is the most exposed area, so avoid rubbing it or running your hand through it. Hairfor2 is waterproof, which helps in rain or when you sweat. After sport, a quick look in the mirror lets you do a small touch-up if needed, always with the comb.
Can I use contour spray on my beard?
Not with our Volumiz and Hairfor2 sprays: they are formulated for hair and scalp, not for beards or facial skin. Beard hair is coarser and the skin on your cheeks is more sensitive. If you want to line up your beard, use a product whose instructions clearly state that use.
Does hairline spray damage your hair?
It is not a dye: the colour stays on the surface and washes out with shampoo. To keep your scalp clean, wash the area well every time and use an anti-residue shampoo if you apply it daily. Avoid contact with your eyes. If irritation occurs, stop using it and ask a healthcare professional for advice.
Do I need a barber to get a good line?
No, it is easy to do at home with a guide comb. A useful trick: ask your barber to shape the line during your cut, note where they place it, then recreate that guide with the Hairline Optimizer between appointments.
Applied well, hairline spray brings back a sharp hairline and precise outlines in just a few moves. Remember three rules: a shade close to your natural colour, a comb to guide and protect, and thin layers. To find yours, browse our range of colouring hair sprays.
